I have a home blood-pressure monitor I almost never use, except last Sunday morning I did. My blood pressure was so high, and my heart rate so low that I really should have called for an emergency ambulance right there and then. Of course being a stupid guy I didn’t ~ even though I had a stack of other warning symptoms that indicated a hypertensive emergency. Going into a hospital full of covid patients isn’t something I wanted to do.
So, with some rest, meditation, extra potassium, no salt, no caffeine, no booze, (I don’t drink anyway, nor do I smoke), and some dark chocolate my blood pressure is now just far too high and not fucking dangerous.
Today, and finally, I had my very first ever telephone conversation with a doctor.
The upshot is that I’m now on blood-pressure medication, which I expected. It’s called amlodipine and comes with a stack of nasty potential side effects. I am also being scheduled a blood test, which I half expected. What I didn’t expect it to be scheduled for an MRI and a CT scan.
It seems that I may just be a lot sicker than I thought.
Some say that high blood pressure is the silent killer. And that you can keep your blood pressure under control if you live a healthy life. All I know is that risking a stroke isn’t worth the dubious pleasures of smoking, drinking, and being overweight.

Most people know about probiotics ~ which are ‘good’ bacteria mostly found in dairy products such as live yogurt. Many of us buy products containing probiotics in order to improve our health. The snag is, which among all the myriads of bacteria in the probiotics we buy are actually ‘good’ for our own unique body and gastrointestinal tract? When we take probiotics we are taking on trust that whatever is in the live yogurt we’ve just bought will benefit us ~ and it might not. Most probiotics in products such as yogurt are proprietary strains of bacteria created in a laboratory, and yet they are not subject to regulation.

In any event, some of us can’t abide yogurt and most other dairy products that might contain probiotics. Milk makes me feel sick.
So what’s the alternative? Turns out it’s prebiotics which act as a fertiliser for the ‘good’ bacteria that’s already in our gastrointestinal tract. Prebiotics help your own ‘good’ bacteria to grow and stay healthy. Prebiotics have many benefits that makes them a better idea than probiotics.
Why should I care one iota about the bacteria I’m carrying around in my intestines? It seems that the bacteria in our gut has a major influence on our health and general well-being. Some of the smart people in white coats aver that the bacteria in our intestines are even more important than that ~ allegedly our bacteria even affects our moods and behaviours. Some say that our gut bacteria is our body’s second brain. And, that the way people think is linked to the bacteria in their gut. All I know is that if I eat the wrong stuff I feel slow, lethargic, and miserable.

It’s the ‘good’ bacteria in the gut that actually digests most of the food we eat, looks after our immune system, and protects us from seriously harmful bacteria. Without these ‘good’ bacteria we can become prone to nasty illnesses such as; acne, early aging, autism, asthma, allergies, cancers, cardiovascular problems, colitis, anxiety and depression, diabetes, obesity, stress, ulcers, vitamin deficiency…
I need to look after my ‘good’ bacteria, and one way to do this is to eat high-fibre foods rich in the prebiotics that act as a fertiliser for the ‘good’ bacteria already in my gut. There’s a long list, but mostly these prebiotics are raw vegetables which are quite indigestible; raw Jerusalem artichoke, raw dandelion greens, raw leeks, under-ripe banana, raw garlic, raw asparagus, raw chicory root, raw wheat bran, and onions any way you like them. (Thank the Gods for the onions and banana ~ the rest of that list looks yuck.) Also honey is a very potent prebiotic, as is unpasteurised apple cider vinegar, (such as Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar).
Turns out that sushi containing cooked and cooled rice is a rich source of prebiotics. I hate sushi.

If you want to make the most of an increased intake of prebiotics, then under no circumstances drink diet soda, eat anything made with wheat flour, have too much refined sugar, drink too much booze, eat pasteurised flavoured yogurt, buy cereal bars or breakfast cereals, eat chips, (crisps), of any kind, and especially never have anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. High fructose corn syrup is highly addictive and extremely bad for you.
In fact, whether you’re eating more prebiotics or not, don’t have anything listed in the preceding paragraph ~ all of those things are very bad for you.
The conclusion is; taking probiotics is most likely a waste of time, and could possibly be doing you harm, especially if you take your probiotics as a yogurt drink. Conversely, eating foods rich in prebiotics will most likely improve your health and help to stave off several nasty, or even life-threatening illnesses. For fitness in body, mind, and spirit, as well as improved health overall, it’s worth fertilising the ‘good’ bacteria already in your gut with prebiotics.
Luckily for me a Paleo diet is supposed to good for giving you lots of prebiotics.

There is some very solid advice for the more experienced among us.
Take Full Control of Your Life. Don’t let others ever again tell you what to do. Don’t blindly follow the advice of others. This includes family, friends, lawyers, doctors, dentists, accountants, financial advisers, insurance agents, government officials, contractors, salespeople of any kind, store clerks… Always question their knowledge, experience, motives…, because usually they aren’t doing things for your benefit, but theirs. Don’t ever do things you don’t want to do. In the end, do whatever you want to do, it’s your life. If you want to take up skydiving at 70, why not? Realistically, what have you got to lose? (The statistics are interesting. If a 25 years old guy kills himself skydiving he’s lost maybe 60 years. If you kill yourself at 70, doing something stupidly dangerous, what have you lost, maybe 15 years? No worries.)
Stay Fit. Exercise needs for the older person are different from the twenty-something keen sportsman. It seems that strength and mobility training is more important than athletic training. Sex is one of the best exercises you can get.

Eat Right. Dietary needs change as we age. Despite anything anyone tells you, really cut down on carbohydrates and give up wheat completely. Don’t eat so much red meat. Think about a Paleo Diet. Try to really cut down on refined sugar and salt. Find a healthy drink to replace coffee. Don’t get fat, it will kill you.
Stay Active and Interested in Life. Don’t just sit around in your chair with a blanket around your knees. As soon as you do that you’ve put one foot in the grave. Live every single day to the full ~ being well-educated you know what carpe diem means. Do it.

Don’t just ‘retire’. Retiring early can kill you. You need to find something to keep you in the ‘working’ frame of mind. Start a business, volunteer for charitable work, get politically active… Whatever you do, don’t stay in bed until noon and then stay up half the night drinking beer and watching sports TV.
Be Optimistic and Happy. Pessimism and Depression will make you physically ill and kill you fast. Negative thoughts and feelings, being grumpy and miserable lead to increased blood sugar and higher blood pressure ~ and all those lead to strokes, heart attacks, dementia, and cancers. Don’t worry, be happy. As we get older it’s time to learn some spirituality and true happiness.
Realise Your Assets and Spend the Money. What’s the point of being the richest corpse in the cemetery? Having spare spending cash helps you to do all the good things in life, and it’s your life. You want to go on a round the world cruise with your new romantic interest? Why the hell not? There may be those among us who worry about a ‘legacy’ for their kids / relatives / the cats’ home… Stop worrying about that because worrying, scrimping and saving, and not having fun will kill you. Downsize your home, or rent, and enjoy the money, spend the savings you’re not actually going to need to live on, don’t buy excessive life assurance cover….
Never Pay For Advice. You know more about money, risks, and life than any young ‘professional’ you are ever going to meet. What’s more you have the time and experience to do the proper research. So, when you’re working out your pension plan, don’t let some financial adviser tell you what to do ~ all they are interested in is their own fees and commissions. So very many older people discover that their nice little nest eggs have just vanished due to avaricious fund managers and insurance companies. Keep your own cash and manage it yourself. You can always borrow money if you really need it.
Never Let Anyone Treat You Like A Senior Citizen. You’re wiser, better educated, and more experienced than some young doctor, nurse, government official, member of your family… They will all expect you to be diffident and compliant, maybe take the ‘happy pills’ ~ just tell them to fuck off. Don’t ever do things just because someone else thinks it’s best for an old person like you. The only time to admit your age is if it leads to getting a discount somewhere.

Sadly there are some things you should give up or cut down on. You must stop smoking, you should at least severely restrict the booze, salt, and sugar. And, don’t take too many drugs, prescription or stuff you buy on the street. Follow some of this advice and you will want as much time as you can get.

SALT DOES NOT CAUSE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
In another piece of contradictory research covering 8,670 French adults, scientists have concluded that the case for salt being a cause of high blood pressure is overstated, and more complex than once believed. In fact the authors of this particular study have concluded that there is no direct link between salt consumption and hypertension.
It seems that other lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol consumption and obesity were strongly linked to a rise in blood pressure. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables was found to be linked to a drop in blood pressure.
Stopping weight increase should be the first target in the general population to counteract the hypertension engine. ~ The American Journal of Hypertension.
On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have just issued a report finding that 90% of US children eat more salt, (sodium chloride), than is good for them. The science surrounding salt ‘is crazy confusing’. In fact the long held belief that salt causes cardio-vascular disease is coming under increasing scrutiny.
Salt is essential for good health in people and animals. Too little salt is very bad for you, causing a condition called hyponatremia. The symptoms are confusion, chronic fatigue, and dizziness. Bad hyponatremia can cause strokes and heart attacks. If the condition goes on long enough it can be fatal. Too much salt can also be fatal.
Low salt diets can cause an increase in hormones and lipids in the blood. A 2012 study in The American Journal of Hypertension found that a low salt diet can cause elevated plasma levels of renin, cholesterol and triglycerides. A low salt diet is linked to early death in people with type 2 diabetes.
A low salt diet is particularly dangerous for the elderly. Hyponatremia is linked to broken hip joints due to falls caused by confusion and a decrease in cognitive ability.
The original ‘proof’ that salt causes high blood pressure was in a 1970s study by Lewis Dahl, who induced high blood pressure in rats by feeding them the equivalent of 50 times the average human salt intake in the western world. Dahl also stated that cultures who regularly consumed higher levels of salt tend to have higher blood pressure.

There is a healthy range of salt intake for most people, the range seems to be 1.5 to 3 teaspoons of salt a day. Too little salt and food tastes bland. To much salt in food makes it almost inedible. The key, as always is to take everything in moderation, avoid processed foods, and avoid modern wheat.
Modern wheat tends to result in an increase in fat around the stomach, and the Mayo Clinic says this is really bad for blood pressure. In another piece of contradictory research, the Mayo Clinic found that an increase of just 5 lbs in fat around the stomach will cause a rise in blood pressure.
To our knowledge, for the first time, we showed that the blood pressure increase was specifically related to increases in abdominal visceral fat… ~ Dr Naima Covassin.
Abdominal visceral fat is the classic ‘beer belly’ and it is caused by sudden increases in blood sugar, such as when drinking alcohol, sugary drinks, eating white bread… Take this theory far enough and it’s obvious that sugar causes high blood pressure, and not salt.
In order to reduce blood pressure, it seems likely that losing weight, cutting down on alcohol, and avoiding modern wheat, is likely to be more effective than cutting down on table salt. The recommended maximum sugar intake is between 5 and 7 teaspoons a day.
It is sugar not the salt that may be the actual causative factor for high blood pressure. ~ Dr James DiNicolantonio in the American Journal of Cardiology.
Exercise helps too ~ an hour of walking a day is enough to help reduce blood pressure. Walking to work reduces stress and improves brain power, according to the University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School.
