Songs on Saturday ~ I go to Extremes

all extremes of feeling are merely madness

Yesterday I ended a long-term friendship with I woman I once believed was special to me.  Perhaps she was special to me, but it seems that I didn’t mean much to her.  This Billy Joel song says something of how that felt for me.

I laid awake for night after night, coming apart at the seams.

Please listen without condemning me.

Key Largo, another example of extremes

Songs on Saturday ~ Billy Joel

people disappoint, passion is ephemeral, pasta is eternal

A long, long time ago, I can still remember when this music used to make me smile.  That was before I started wearing Italian suits, dated an Italian girl, bought an Italian car, and almost married into the Jacionelli Family.  Suit Ferragamo, Shoes Gucci, Car Alpha Romeo, Girl Sophia, Ice Cream Jacionelli.

Some say that you can’t ever truly know a woman until you’ve taken her out for dinner to your favorite little Italian Restaurant.  And that you will never what she’s going to look like when she’s older until you’ve met her mother.  All I know is that I’d rather have an Alpha Romeo sports car than a Morris Oxford.

History may be repeating itself ~ as history does

beautiful, expensive, temperamental

In the middle of the night

he was spiritual but never religious

Last night, around midnight, I went walking along the beach.  Far out, about at the horizon, something flew past very slowly.

The Royal Air Force doesn’t have spy planes.

some say the USAF doesn’t have big ugly fat fuckers anymore either

Tunes on Tuesday ~ Billy Joel

don’t shoot me, I’m only the piano player

Back in the day, when I was young, naive, and innocent, I did have something cool going for me.  I have always had a superior man’s taste in music.  Maybe this isn’t necessarily representative of that.  Although Scenes From An Italian Restaurant is.

Billy Joel’s main claim to fame is that he was one married to the super-model Christie Brinkley.

Please listen without needing a strong drink.

how lucky was the much younger me that we didn’t get Sports Illustrated in England

and that’s a cheat bikini

Songs on Saturday ~ Piano Man

Booze is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

I’m English, but I’ve spent time in bars in most of the major cities in Europe and the United States.  You know that you’re spreading it a little widely when you walk into a bar in say ~ New York, just off Madison Avenue, and the barman knows immediately that you drink a stirred vodka martini, or several.

~

I’ve spent far too much time in bars exactly like the one in this song, except there was usually a slightly inebriated woman sitting at the bar trying to get picked up for casual sex.  Sad really.  And the piano man was never as good as Billy Joel.

I don’t pick up women in bars,

and I don’t have casual sex.

Songs on Saturday ~ Billy Joel

There are no moralities nor rules to be found in arson.

This is a live version of the song ~ not the single release.  I like the raw energy, and the pictures.  (The lyrics are cool too.)

You know what?  If you can’t handle me at my very worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my very best.  You have lit the spark in my bonfire heart, and I don’t want to get burned again.

Please listen responsibly.  And, never, ever play with fire.

Forgotten Modern History

In December seventy years ago the French decided they would stay in Indochina.  This set off a chain of misery which did not end when the Americans were defeated by Vietnamese communists in 1975 with the fall of Saigon. French occupation of Vietnam ended with their defeat at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.  The Vietnamese Cambodian war then went on until 1991.

Please listen responsibly.

Perhaps we should all learn a little more forgotten history.

they are extremes

So, what about politics?  There’s nothing useful for this Englishman to say about the US Presidential election.  Less than useful is I thought British politics was bad until I took an interest in the political goings on in the world’s most powerful nation.

Right now, politics in the United States of America seems just a bit… extreme.

Here’s a song for whoever wins.

Please Listen Responsibly.

Whoever does get into the White House, I hope my American friends will continue to survive and thrive in Freedonia.

Extremes of Behaviour

Why Do I Go To Extremes?

Most people like to know where they stand.  It’s part of human nature to want the people you know to be same person today that they were yesterday, and to be able to rely on them to be that very same person tomorrow.

In general your friends want to be able to depend on you.  Usually the people you come into contact with will become wary and suspicious if you suddenly turn into a crazy person, especially if you often become that crazy person.  This goes doubly if you’re male and the friend in question is a woman.

Call it mood swings if you like, but if there’s a sudden and expected change in the way you feel and behave, especially when you’re angry and unhappy, you’re going to hurt someone.  You will probably cause emotional distress to several people, they may never trust you again, they may become distant and feel threatened by you.  If it’s bad enough you may sadden, offend, upset, devastate, and cause anguish to someone you love, and they may just walk away from you.

I know, because I’ve been there.

If you want your relationships to thrive and survive in the urban jungle, then find the cause of your mood swings, and then find yourself the cure.  It may be hard, you may be crazy, but very few women are looking for a lunatic.

Please listen responsibly.
