Food on Friday ~ Music

all we ever get is gruel

As it goes, lots of Americans eat gruel all the time ~ it’s merely another name for oatmeal.  Mixed thin mind you, but oatmeal nontheless.  This from the musical Oliver, based on Charles Dickens seminal work; Oliver Twist.

Some things mentioned in that song you may not have heard of; pease pudding and savaloy.  You’re not missing much if you’ve never tried either.

  2. I’ve heard of pease porridge. It is in a nursery rhyme. it is supposed to good even when 9 days old! lol I am not a huge fan of oatmeal or grains. Grains have a lot of carbs in them and carbs mean higher doses of insulin.

      best made when you are boiling a ham.
      it's a bit of a North of England thing ~ like mushy peas.
      Oatmeal ~ they can keep it.

      1. I’ll be jiggered!!!!!! Mother Goose is English! lol
        I’m not fond of peas and ham or beans and ham. I prefer my ham with taters! I did know a guy who would put meat in his oatmeal. Bits of steak or ham or bacon. That sounded logical!
