Durham; half church of God, half castle against the Scot.
The City of Durham was founded in 995 AD, although I guess there were people living there for centuries before the monks arrived to ‘officially’ found Durham City. Building work on the spectacularly imposing Norman cathedral was begun in 1093 AD, but there was an earlier Anglo-Saxon cathedral on the site for about 100 years before that.
History is always written by the winners.

The first picture of the cathedral is a stock photo, the tower was covered in scaffold when I was there.
In medieval times touching the door knocker gave criminals sanctuary.
I used to drink in that pub when I was a younger man.
We’re just back from Durham too 🙂 Love the old winding streets there … haven’t got my photos anywhere in order yet though (!) Wonderful post.

A haunted pub! What fun!!! I’ve never been in a haunted pub … actually, I’ve never been in a haunted anything that I’m aware of! I especially liked the door-knocker and the stained glass. If I ever make it to your side of the pond, perhaps you can give me a tour! 🙂
Hugs, Jack!!! ❤

I think that would be a wonderful tour! Realistically, the odds of me ever getting ‘cross the pond in this lifetime are probably slim-to-none, but I can dream, can’t I? So, we shall visit Durham, pop into the haunted pub for some tea, and then we shall go dancing! And then …. well, who knows? 🙂
Love ‘n hugs, Jack! ❤ ❤ ❤

Great post Jack. My coal mining ancestors (grandfather and back) are from County Durham – the wonderfully named Hetton-Le-Hole and Houghton-Le-Spring. I don’t have any real connection with the place but we did have a summer holiday in the north east (including a day in Durham) several years ago and there are some fantastic places to visit.

I lived in Hetton-le-Hole for a while, and I went to school in Houghton-le-Spring ~ small world.

Now I want to go see the ghosts at The Shakespeare rather than the castle!! Great sights!!

The Shakespeare is a tiny pub, a couple of dozen people and it’s packed. And, it is haunted.
