To the New Year

With what stillness at last

you appear out at sea

your first sunlight reaching down

to touch the crests of the

small waves that hardly stir

as though they had not noticed

and did not know you at all

the voice of a grey goose calls

from far away in the mist

to the calm of New Year’s Day
